The National Food Holidays of April 2013

As we enter the 4th month of the year, we get one step closer to weekends filled with great BBQs, numerous outdoor events and for the kids late nights staying up enjoying the warm summer air and all of the mischief that comes with it. When the temperatures rise, everyone begins to feel a bit more comfortable showing off those beach ready bodies they have been “working on” for the last few months. April is a special month for us as well, because it marks the start of many great things in nature and in the kitchen.

Last year around this time we noted how the constant rise in the cost of fuel was making it harder for everyone to make a dollar without compromising the quality of the food they offered to their customers. We know that times aren’t getting any easier, but when people pull together to help one another overcome an obstacle no matter what it may be, things get accomplished for the better. The Food Holidays of April 2012

April is home to numerous #FoodHolidays that allow us to eat the healthier, more natural foods that are found in abundance this time of year. With the weather being as off as it has been the last few months, added to the constant increase in the cost of fuel, the prices have raised dramatically while the availability of certain foods has diminished quite unnaturally.
It is in times like these that we must band together and help each other get what we need to survive as well as grow physically, mentally and spiritually.

National Hot and Spicy Foods Day

The beginning of the year is home to a great holiday that many people celebrate daily without evening knowing it. National Hot & Spicy Foods Day, is a Holy Day in The Supreme Plates offices and we make sure to eat as much deliciously spicy foods as we can. Starting off with a super condiment, known to make millions of dish delicious and even more backsides angry at their owners, Sriracha should be coveted like fine wine on this day.

For those unclear on just what we are talking about, Sriracha Sauce, is the name of one of the greatest sauces known to mankind. Srircha is named after the seaside city of Si Racha, in central Thailand where it was first produced for local seafood restaurants. The distinct taste of chili peppers, vinegar, garlic, sugar and salt have dominated the Asian market here in the United States since its inception in 1980. This puree version is primarily produced by Huy Fong Foods this is different from the Thai paste from which it takes its name.
Traditionally a tangy, sweeter sauce with a lot of kick from chiles, it’s thick texture make it perfect for just about any application.

From sushi, pizza and BBQ to soups, pastas and chow mein dishes, Sriracha is truly a unique flavor enhancing condiment that deserves to on every table or fridge in the United States.
Due to its ingredients, Sriracha does not need to be stored in the refrigerator as some people tend to believe. Available in almost every Supermarket in the Asian foods aisle and of course in your local Asian Market or online at Huy Fong.com

Pick up some today and put it on whatever your eating tonight. We promise it will taste good. Check the Recipes below for some great ideas as to where you can use Sriracha Sauce while making a memorable meal at home.

Recipe Of The Day: Shrimp Scampi & Garlic Toast

National Shrimp Scampi Day is April 29th and with that we wanted to take a few moments and speak on how incredibly important dishes such as these are to the world. What little people know about how overhunted our oceans have become is scary and even more horrifying is the lack of quality Seafood that will be available to both ourselves and our children, over the next 25 to 50 years.
So that we don’t go off on a tangent about switching up diets and always keepings things rotating to avoid eating ourselves into extinction consider this little fact;
Cod, which is one of the most commonly used fish in numerous applications from the Fish Filet to everyday fish-sticks, is in danger of being wiped off the face of the Earth relatively soon.
Shrimp Scampi is a great alternative to fried fish, fish tacos or fried shrimp and cooks up incredibly quick. Served with great tasting Garlic Toast to help soak up all of that wonderful juice, this dish is a meal that comes together in under 20 mins and leaves you full, but not grossly overstuffed so that you cant move and need a nap after your done eating. It is also a great way to introduce kids to seafood because the flavors of the garlic and butter are easy on the palate.
The term Scampi is actually derived from a Greek word that refers to a species of Lobster that has been widely adapted around the world to reference a style of cooking seafood that commonly includes serving it in butter with lemon on the side.
Enjoy this simple Shrimp Scampi dish with a sweet Moscato wine or some chilled Vodka & Cranberry Juice.

Ingredients:
3 TBS extra-virgin olive oil
3 TBS unsalted butter
5 cloves garlic, chopped
Kosher salt
Pinch of red pepper flakes
8 - ½inch- thick slices crusty bread
1 ¼ lbs large shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails intact
¾ cup dry white wine or low-sodium chicken broth
Grated zest and juice of ½ lemon, plus lemon wedges for serving
