National Cheeseburger Day / The Supreme Plate Turkey Burger


Today is National Cheeseburger Day and we recently sent out a tweet letting people know just what it was. Instantly we got a few hits for our Supreme Turkey Burger recipe so we knew we had to share it with the people. This recipe is an adaptation from our classic Bacon Cheeseburger Recipe, only in this recipe instead of BBQ sauce we use ketchup so as to not overpower the delicious flavors of the ground turkey.
The key to this one is not overcooking the burger, leaving you with something tougher than your great granddaddies elbows.
Enjoy this one quickly and often because on top of tasting really good, it is actually pretty healthy for you.

Ingredients
2 cloves garlic (minced)
Kosher salt
2 Eggs, (beaten)
¼ - ½ cup Italian style bread crumbs
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp hot sauce
2 lbs lean 93% ground turkey meat
6 oz lean ground sirloin
2 TBS olive oil
½ large onion (small dice)
1 tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp dark chili powder
½ cup ketchup (Heinz 57)
1 TBS Balsamic Vinegar
2 large Roasted Red Peppers (deseeded and diced fine)
Freshly ground black pepper
6-8 whole wheat burger buns
Garnishes:
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Mustard
Ketchup
Bacon
Avocado

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Smash the garlic cloves, sprinkle with some salt, and, with the flat side of a large knife, mash and smear the mixture to a coarse paste.
Whisk the garlic with the Worcestershire, eggs, ketchup and hot sauce in a small bowl.
Crumble the turkey and beef into a large mixing bowl.
Add the bread crumbs, smoked paprika, dark chili powder and roasted peppers into the combined meats and mix thoroughly.
Pour the garlic, egg, Worcestershire and ketchup mixture over the meat and form into 6 - 8 burgers.
Cover and set aside while you cook the onions.
Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned but not mushy, about 15 minutes.
Season the onions with the remaining teaspoon of balsamic and salt and pepper, to taste.
Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat for a minute.
Brush 1 side of the burgers with the oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste.
Cook seasoned side down until browned, about 2 minutes.
Brush and season the top of the burgers, flip and cook until other side is brown, about 2 minutes more.
Transfer burgers to a baking dish and bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted side ways into the burgers registers 160 degrees F, about 5 minutes.
Place the burgers on the buns let them rest for a few minutes.
 Serve with the caramelized onions and garnishes of your choice.
